There might not have been a harder working player on the Eagles this past summer than tight end Zach Ertz, who spent his offseason training in California and traveling around meeting with different coaches to help his blocking.
On Sunday, Ertz will get a chance to see what hard work paying off looks like, when he will be in Vancouver, Canada to watch girlfriend Julie Johnston play for America in the Women's World Cup final vs. Japan.
"She's great,'' Ertz said of Johnston. "She probably runs more than anyone on the field. She has to sprint up for a set piece and then sprint back on defense. I kind of laugh when I see her blond hair streaking across the field.''
Johnston, 23, has been one of the best players on her team during the tournament, anchoring a USA defense that has allowed only one goal.
The two met in college, when Ertz was playing for Stanford and Johnston was at Santa Clara. Here is how Ertz described meeting Johnston for the first time.
It was a pretty random meeting at a Stanford baseball game that she just happened to be attending. I was there with my buddies and saw her sitting in the student section, and just decided I wanted to meet her. So I went up and sat right next to her. We just hit it off from there. We hung out a few more times and after that, we just decided that we were going to be together.
Ertz has made his way out to one of the games so far, watching with former Sixers guard Jrue Holiday, who is married to Johnston's teammate, Lauren Holiday.
